GASTRIC BANDING
What Is Gastric Banding?
In this method, commonly known as stomach clamp, we prefer to call adjustable silicone gastric band.In this method, which is performed completely laparoscopically, a band like pants belt is placed around the stomach approximately 3-4 cm below the junction of the esophagus and stomach.
The band, made of silicone and without any allergic effects, divides the stomach into two compartments, such as an hourglass.
During the operation, no incisions or injuries are made to the stomach or other internal organs, and they are operated at completely natural intervals.
When the small stomach pouch is filled with food, an early feeling of saturation occurs and food intake is reduced.
“The inner wall of the band is like a longitudinal balloon or bicycle tire. This balloon is connected to a port placed under the skin through a thin tube. The port is made of titanium and is silicon-coated on some brands of bands. There is a membrane on the upper face that can be entered by needle. The band is left down during surgery.
After approximately 1 month, it is gradually inflated with serum injections from the port under the skin. In this way, the size of the gastric passage after surgery can be changed by a simple intervention as an injection.
As in other surgical methods, the fundamental principle is to change the patient’s behavioral habits and eating patterns. When efforts are made to gain proper eating habits, stomach clamp can lead to serious weight loss without starvation, deprivation of any food, as in diets, and provide a healthier life by reducing the risks associated with obesity-related secondary diseases.”
Stomach Clap (Gastric Banding). Who can it be applied to?
In the Stomach Clap (Gastric Banding) surgical operations patient selection is very important. Before deciding for gastric banding surgery, the patient should undergo detailed analysis and demonstrate that obesity is not caused by any genetic, endocrine, neurological (such as hypothalamic disfunction) pathology or drug use. Otherwise, cause treatment should be preferred.
This surgery can be applied to who:
Fail to lose weight with methods such as diet,
exercise, medicine and stomach balloon,
Has obesity which can not be prevented due to food intake,
Has no sugar addiction,
Has no eating disorder,
Has the obesity with a cause of non-hormonal,
Has the body mass index above 40 or 30-40, with concomitant disease (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea syndrome, arthritis),
Is 18-60 years old, Is Obese for at least 4 years,
Are not alcohol and drug addicts,
Stomach clamp ( Gastric Banding) can be applied to mentally ill patients who can understand the method to be applied and adapt after surgery.
Since surgery requires quite a lot of skill, it can be performed by a small number of surgeons (less than fifty) in the world. The effects on metabolism are more pronounced in order to slow down fat absorption, thus facilitating and helping to lose weight in the long term.
Although it is the most effective among the 4 surgical methods that provide weight loss, postoperative risks may be higher. Due to the long-term effects of slowing fat absorption, the method requires mastery and the long postoperative examination period, only about 50 bariatri surgeons in the world can perform this operation.
